Leadership figures within Turkey's ruling AKP party and its coalition partner, the MHP, have begun public discussions regarding the next presidential and parliamentary elections, slated for 2028. Abdulhamit Gul, deputy head of the AKP parliamentary group, asserted that there are no legal or constitutional barriers to Recep Tayyip Erdogan seeking another term, suggesting such a move aligns with national expectations.

Discussions regarding the election timeline remain fluid, with differing estimates provided by senior figures. MHP leader Devlet Bahceli proposed May 14, 2028, as the election date, clarifying that an earlier poll would be considered a renewal rather than an early election. Conversely, presidential advisor Mehmet Ucum suggested April 16, 2028, citing the symbolic importance of the anniversary of the referendum that established the current presidential system. Ucum explicitly stated that this would be Erdogan’s final candidacy.
