Assessment of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) in Cyprus
A comprehensive survey of the General Healthcare System (GeSY) in Cyprus, conducted by IMR/University of Nicosia between September 8 and September 14, 2026, reveals a complex picture of patient satisfaction. Based on a representative sample of 1,000 beneficiaries, the study shows that Cyprus ranks second globally, after Switzerland, in terms of service availability. The findings were officially presented by Christina Kokkalou, CEO of IMR, during the 9th Cyprus Healthcare Conference.
Despite high general satisfaction and reduced waiting lists, the data highlights significant systemic weaknesses. Approximately one in three beneficiaries reports difficulty in accessing specific medical specialties and diagnostic examinations. The study utilized indicators from the international PaRIS survey by the OECD, which involved 107,000 patients across 19 countries, to provide a comparative analysis of the domestic healthcare experience.
The findings serve as a diagnostic tool for the ongoing evolution of the system. While the positive perception of service availability is notable, the identified operational challenges underscore the necessity for continued structural improvements to address the accessibility issues reported by the public.
