European Union disburses 3.3 billion euros in defense aid to Ukraine

On September 18, 2026, the European Commission announced the disbursement of 3.3 billion euros to Ukraine to support the country's defense capabilities. The funds, which are part of a broader 90-billion-euro support loan covering 2026 and 2027, are specifically earmarked for the procurement of missiles and drones. While Von der Leyen highlighted the need for continued support and proposed a new joint European-Ukrainian defense industry program utilizing the remaining SAFE instrument funds, Zelensky characterized the dialogue as productive but did not publicly acknowledge the new disbursement in his own reporting. The funding aims to bolster Ukraine’s air defense systems, with potential applications including the procurement of American PAC-3 Patriot missiles and the development of an affordable air defense system based on the 'Freya' project.
