SPD overtakes AfD in final Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election poll

The center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) has overtaken the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in voter preference polls just two days before the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. According to an ZDF survey released on Thursday, the SPD, led by incumbent state premier Manuela Schwesig, rose by three percentage points to 37%. Conversely, the AfD, with candidate Leif-Erik Holm, saw its support dip by one percentage point to 36%.

Other parties are facing significant electoral challenges. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, fell to 6%, putting them at risk of failing to pass the 5% threshold required to enter the state parliament. The incumbent coalition partner, The Left (Die Linke), declined by one point to 9%. Meanwhile, the Greens remain stable at 5%, while the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) is polling at 4%, which would leave them outside of the legislature. The election is scheduled for this coming Sunday, marking a pivotal moment for the regional political landscape.
