Recent wave of arson and wildfire incidents across Cyprus

Between September 18 and September 20, 2026, Cypriot authorities responded to multiple fire incidents involving both private vehicles and rural landscapes. In Limassol on September 18, a van parked in the Agios Ioannis area was set on fire; authorities confirmed the blaze was malicious and involved the use of flammable materials. A similar incident occurred in Strovolos on September 19, where a neighbor extinguished a fire affecting a vehicle in a metal garage before professional crews arrived. In both cases, police and fire services initiated arson investigations.

Simultaneously, several wildfires and vehicle fires occurred elsewhere. On September 18, a vehicle fire in a Paphos municipal parking lot was brought under control within minutes. On the same day, a major wildfire near Kapsali, between the villages of Miliou and Yiolou, consumed nine acres of vegetation before being contained by a multi-agency effort involving six fire engines and four aircraft. Additionally, a small forest fire broke out near the Prodromos Dam on September 20, leading authorities to question two individuals as part of an ongoing inquiry into the cause of the blaze.

While investigations into the vehicle arsons and forest fires continue, no immediate arrests have been confirmed regarding the car attacks. Authorities maintain a high state of alert across the regions as forensics teams evaluate evidence from the respective scenes.
