Series of fire incidents reported across Cyprus
Between September 18 and 20, 2026, Cyprus experienced several fire incidents across the island. On September 18, a fire broke out in a municipal parking lot in Paphos, damaging a vehicle, while another arson incident occurred in a Limassol parking area. Additionally, a large brush fire burned nine acres of vegetation in the Kapsali region between Miliou and Yiolou, requiring air support to contain. On September 19, an arson attempt on a vehicle in Strovolos was thwarted by a neighbor, and a fire involving three separate ignitions was reported in Orounta.
On the morning of September 20, a forest fire broke out in the Troodos State Forest near the Prodromos Dam. Forestry and fire services contained the blaze within 40 minutes, limiting the damage to five square meters. Two men, aged 18 and 20, were detained by police in connection with this incident, claiming they accidentally started the fire while attempting to cook food. Investigations into the causes of the various other fires remain ongoing, as authorities assess the motives behind the suspected acts of arson in the urban incidents.
