Summary of recent fire incidents across Cyprus
Cyprus faced several fire incidents over the weekend of September 19-20, 2026. On Friday night, a suspected arson attempt occurred in a vehicle parked in a metal garage in Strovolos, which was extinguished by a neighbor. On Sunday, a forest fire broke out at 00:45 in the Troodos State Forest near the Prodromos Dam. Two individuals, aged 18 and 20, were detained and are currently being questioned; they claimed the fire started while they were cooking food, resulting in five square meters of burnt vegetation.
Additional incidents occurred on Saturday and Sunday. In Orounta, a fire involving three separate ignition points scorched approximately one hectare of dry vegetation. In the Paphos district, firefighters and forestry officials controlled a fire near the communities of Arodes and Kritou Tera that damaged four decares of land. Another fire was reported near Anayia in the Nicosia district, where four forestry vehicles were deployed to support firefighting efforts. Authorities, including the Fire Service and the Department of Forests, are actively investigating the causes of these fires and continue to monitor high-risk areas across the island.
