Wildfires reported across Cyprus throughout the weekend

Several fires broke out across Cyprus on September 20, 2026, prompting immediate responses from the Fire Service and the Department of Forests. In the early morning, a fire ignited near the Prodromos Dam in the Troodos Forest due to two individuals, aged 18 and 20, who were attempting to cook while camping. The blaze, which burned approximately five square meters, was contained by 01:25. The suspects admitted to their actions after being questioned by the Morphou CID and were released pending a court appearance.

Later that day, two additional fires were reported. One blaze occurred between the communities of Kato Arodes and Kritou Tera in the Paphos district, burning four decares of dry grass before being brought under control. Simultaneously, another fire erupted between the communities of Anayia and Klirou in the Nicosia district, affecting 1.5 hectares of vegetation and scattered pine trees. This incident required a multi-agency operation involving the Fire Service, the Department of Forests, the Game and Fauna Service, and volunteer groups. Both incidents are currently under investigation to determine the exact causes and full extent of the damages.
