UK Parliament discusses unsolved 2016 murder of George Low in Cyprus

Ten years after the murder of 22-year-old George Low in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, the case has been brought before the UK House of Commons. Low, a resident of Dartford, was fatally stabbed in August 2016 while on holiday with his friend Ben Barker, who survived the attack. Dartford MP Jim Dickson raised the issue during a parliamentary debate, urging the British government to exert further pressure on Turkey to secure justice for the victim's family.

International arrest warrants were issued for suspects Mehmet Akpinar and Sali Ahmet, who fled to the Turkish-occupied areas of Cyprus following the incident. Turkish authorities failed to extradite the men to the Republic of Cyprus, and the suspects eventually left the island. In July, the Turkish Embassy in London informed the BBC that local prosecutors had decided against charging Akpinar, citing no specific reason. The British government has since committed to continuing discussions with both Ankara and Nicosia to seek clarification on the handling of the case and potential legal avenues.
