Greek police dismantle criminal network using AI for voice cloning

Greek authorities have dismantled a criminal organization that defrauded victims of over one million euros by utilizing artificial intelligence to clone voices. The syndicate was uncovered following the arrest of two individuals serving as cash collectors for the group.

The scammers initially contacted victims under the pretense of installing fiber optic cables. If victims grew suspicious, the criminals asked them to verify the claims with a relative. While the victim was occupied, the fraudsters would call the relative, posing as mobile network operators to obtain a voice sample. This sample was then processed through AI tools to create a realistic clone of the relative's voice, which was used to deceive the original target and finalize the fraudulent schemes.

The operation highlights the increasing use of advanced technology in organized crime. Authorities have successfully shut down the network's activities after an investigation, and legal proceedings against the apprehended suspects are currently underway.
