Nicosia police arrest man for possession of untaxed tobacco products

On September 16 and 17, police officers from the Nicosia Crime Prevention Unit conducted an operation targeting the illegal possession and distribution of untaxed tobacco. During this operation, authorities intercepted a 40-year-old man driving his vehicle in the Engomi area.

A search of the suspect's car revealed 396 boxes of tobacco products, consisting of 301 boxes of heated tobacco and 95 boxes of regular cigarettes. Additionally, officers seized €2,400 in cash and two mobile phones found in the vehicle. The man was arrested for tax evasion and the illegal trade of tobacco, and he was subsequently taken to the Customs Department in Nicosia for further processing.

Following the seizure of the contraband and the impoundment of his vehicle, the Customs Department issued the suspect an out-of-court settlement fine totaling €20,000. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Customs authorities as the legal proceedings regarding the fines and the seized assets continue.
