Nicosia police seize illicit tobacco products and fine 40-year-old man

Between September 16 and 17, 2026, members of the Nicosia Police Operations Department (OPE) conducted an investigation following intelligence regarding the illegal possession, distribution, and trade of untaxed tobacco products and tax evasion. During the operation, police intercepted a 40-year-old man driving in the Engomi area.

A subsequent search of the suspect's vehicle revealed 396 cartons of tobacco products, specifically 301 cartons of heated tobacco and 95 cartons of traditional cigarettes. In addition to the tobacco, authorities confiscated 2,400 euros in cash and two mobile phones. The suspect was arrested on the spot, and his vehicle was detained as evidence.

The case was handed over to the Department of Customs in Nicosia for further processing. Following the investigation, customs officials issued an out-of-court fine of 20,000 euros to the 40-year-old man for the possession of the untaxed goods.
