Omonia named Europa League performance of the week

Following the first matchday of the UEFA Europa League League Phase, Cypriot club Omonia received the 'Performance of the Week' award from UEFA. This recognition stems from their 1-0 victory against Spanish La Liga side Celta Vigo. The win was highly significant, as it marks only the fifth time a Cypriot team has defeated a Spanish opponent in 42 encounters.

Omonia faced competition for the title from the English club Bournemouth, which secured a 2-1 away victory against Real Sociedad. UEFA initially opened a public head-to-head vote on social media to determine the most impressive performance. According to the final results, Omonia secured the honor with 54% of the fan vote, edging out Bournemouth for the top spot. The achievement has been widely celebrated as a historic milestone for Cypriot football in European competitions.
