Nicosia sewer infrastructure upgrade project commences in the UN buffer zone

The Nicosia District Self-Government Organization (EOA) announced the commencement of the 'Trunk 1 Sewer Reconstruction – UN Buffer Zone' project. The official kick-off meeting and site inspection took place on September 11, 2026, marking the start of work on a 700-meter sewage pipeline segment passing through the United Nations buffer zone toward the Nicosia bi-communal sewage treatment plant in Mia Milia.

Valued at 1,967,499 euros, the project involves reconstructing the existing sewer line to ensure structural integrity. A critical component of this infrastructure development is the parallel installation of a new pipeline designed to transport tertiary-treated water from the treatment plant to areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus. This irrigation initiative will allow for the daily transport of up to 20,000 cubic meters of treated water, providing a significant resource for local agricultural needs and environmental management.

This project represents a strategic effort to improve sewage management and optimize water resource utilization in the Nicosia province. Following the contract signing and initial site assessments, the works are now proceeding under the coordination of key stakeholders involved in the oversight of this critical cross-boundary infrastructure.
