Surging fuel prices spark concern in Cyprus following Middle East geopolitical instability

Fuel prices in Cyprus have experienced significant spikes, with petrol, diesel, and heating oil reaching record highs. Since March 1, 2026, petrol prices have risen by 35 cents per litre, while diesel and heating oil have increased by 52 and 61 cents respectively. The surge is largely attributed to the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure, which caused global market volatility and supply concerns. By late September 2026, diesel prices were nearing 2 euros per litre, putting immense strain on household budgets, particularly for those relying on heating oil, where filling a standard 1,000-litre tank now costs approximately 618 euros more than it did before the conflict escalated.

Industry representatives, including the Cyprus Consumers Association and the Association of Gas Station Owners, have called for immediate and targeted government intervention to support vulnerable groups. While the government recently extended a consumption tax reduction until late November, stakeholders argue that more is needed, specifically demanding subsidies for heating oil. Economic analysts note that the market remains in a state of high uncertainty, with future price trends dependent on the development of regional conflicts and global supply stabilization. Fuel station owners anticipate further price increases of one to two cents per litre in the near term.
