Charalambos Theopemptou receives the 2026 Democracy Award
On September 15, 2026, the Centre for Socio-Political Thought "Politeia" presented the 2026 Democracy Award to Charalambos Theopemptou, the former leader of the Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation. The award ceremony was held at the Press House in Nicosia, with the award being presented by the honorary president of "Politeia," Nikos Peristianis.
During the event, former MP Alexandra Attalidou delivered a speech highlighting Theopemptou's formative years. She recounted his time as a student in London, where he worked in a clothing factory to fund his education. Attalidou emphasized that these experiences cultivated his environmental conscience and grounded his political approach, preventing him from becoming a distant figure. Theopemptou himself reflected on these early life adventures, which served as the foundation for his long-term activism and subsequent political career, during which he became known for balancing high-level EU legislative work with grassroots local environmental concerns.
This recognition acknowledges his dedication to both institutional politics and direct civic action, reflecting his transition from a hardworking student to a prominent environmental advocate in Cyprus.
