Andreas Mavroyiannis discusses potential 2028 presidential bid
Andreas Mavroyiannis, who was a candidate in the 2023 Cypriot presidential election, has publicly commented on the possibility of running again in 2028. Speaking to local media on September 18, 2026, he stated that he is currently evaluating his position through consultations with his previous supporters and associates. While he emphasized that the final decision does not rest solely on him, he noted that current trends indicate he will likely be a candidate.
Regarding his electoral prospects, Mavroyiannis referenced several internal polls, including one leaked from the Democratic Rally (DISY) and others he received, which he claims place him in the first position. He characterized these findings as significant for his considerations. Reflecting on the 2023 election, he analyzed the mistakes that led to the victory of incumbent President Nikos Christodoulides.
Mavroyiannis harshly criticized the current administration under President Christodoulides, describing it as a "farce" and specifically questioning the effectiveness of its foreign policy. He argued that public perception of the President has evolved significantly since 2023, as the electorate is now more aware of the administration's performance. As of now, Mavroyiannis has not issued a final formal declaration of his candidacy.
