Deputy Minister of Research visits Proteas energy facility in Pentakomo

On Friday, September 18, 2026, the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, visited the Proteas experimental energy facility of the Cyprus Institute located in Pentakomo. The visit focused on reviewing innovative technologies for renewable energy production and advanced energy storage systems, which are currently being tested at the site.

During the visit, Cyprus Institute President Stavros Malas described the facility as a model for the future of the nation, emphasizing that Cyprus must move beyond reliance on diesel and natural gas. Malas highlighted that as a geographically isolated island, Cyprus requires sustainable long-term energy solutions to mitigate high electricity generation costs. Damianou praised the work performed at the center and reiterated the government's commitment to shifting the national economic model from service-based to one centered on knowledge, innovation, and technology.

The government is currently in the advanced stages of developing a new research and innovation strategy, as well as a strategy for artificial intelligence. These initiatives aim to foster a new productive model for the country, with officials evaluating the specific technological solutions demonstrated at the Proteas facility for potential future implementation.
