Strovolos and Nicosia municipalities increase mosquito control efforts

Following heavy rainfall in August, the Strovolos and Nicosia municipalities have significantly intensified mosquito control operations. The Strovolos Municipality is conducting systematic checks and targeted interventions in public areas such as manholes, storm-water drains, streams, and areas near the GSP Stadium, the Parisinos neighborhood, and the Kalogyros River. These efforts aim to eliminate standing water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Health authorities emphasize that personal responsibility is critical, as more than 60% of mosquito-related complaints originate from households. Officials highlighted incidents where neglected items like indoor vases and poorly maintained private swimming pools or construction sites became major breeding sources. Property owners are held responsible for clearing these private sites, while municipal teams continue to focus their efforts strictly on public infrastructure. Public health officials are urging citizens to maintain their private spaces to mitigate the current spike in mosquito populations.
