Cypriot parliamentary speaker meets EU Commissioner to discuss fisheries support
On Friday, September 18, 2026, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou, held a meeting with the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis. The discussions focused on the urgent need for increased support and protection for Cypriot fishermen, who are currently facing significant professional challenges in the sector.
Demetriou emphasized that she has engaged with fishermen both individually and through their organizations, urging that a more concrete support framework be included in forthcoming EU plans. In response, Commissioner Kadis noted that the European Union intends to proceed with a targeted revision of the Common Fisheries Policy during the next programming period to better address these regional concerns. Demetriou also highlighted the importance of keeping the Cypriot parliament well-informed regarding evolving European policies.
