Nottingham Forest receives approval for City Ground stadium expansion

On September 16, 2026, the local planning committee of Nottingham officially approved plans to expand the City Ground stadium. Owned by Vangelis Marinakis, the club aims to increase the facility's current capacity from 31,000 to a potential 52,500 seats through a multi-stage project with an estimated cost of approximately 920 to 922 million euros.

The project includes the demolition and replacement of the Peter Taylor stand and the reconstruction of the Trent End, which will initially raise the capacity to 45,000. Additionally, the club received preliminary approval to redevelop the Brian Clough stand, potentially adding another 7,500 seats. The broader development plan includes the creation of a new public square, new restaurants, and general facility upgrades, making it the largest stadium in the East Midlands.

This decision marks a significant increase from the previously approved 35,000-seat expansion plan from last summer. Following the submission of these more ambitious proposals, the city council granted full planning permission for the initial phases, while providing preliminary clearance for the final expansion stage, allowing the project to proceed toward its long-term goals.
