Stanford researchers challenge traditional model of human brain structure
Researchers from the Stanford University School of Medicine have published a study challenging the long-standing scientific belief that the human brain is a single, homogeneous organ. The new findings suggest that the brain is actually composed of two distinct ancient nervous systems that have evolved independently over hundreds of millions of years before being packaged together.
According to the study, one system regulates vital biological functions such as breathing and heart rate, while the other supports uniquely human capacities like abstract thinking, mathematics, and complex language. This discovery contradicts the dominant developmental model which previously assumed all brain regions shared a common origin. The adult brain is anatomically divided into the forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain, with the forebrain handling higher-level cognitive functions including consciousness and language, while the hindbrain manages foundational survival processes.
This research marks a significant shift in neurobiological understanding, moving away from the view of a unified organ toward a dual-system evolutionary framework.
