Cyprus government establishes national sports council

On September 16, 2026, the Cypriot Council of Ministers approved the establishment of the National Sports Council of Cyprus. The body will serve as a high-level advisory panel for a three-year term, aiming to provide scientific and professional expertise to the state. Chaired by Dr. Kalli Chatziiosif, the council consists of ten specialized sectors, each led by an expert responsible for forming a dedicated working group to address issues ranging from academic partnerships and social inclusion to mental health and medical support.

The council’s primary mandate involves drafting comprehensive proposals for the creation of a Deputy Ministry of Sport and a national Sports Institute of Cyprus. Findings and recommendations will be submitted directly to the President of the Republic, with copies distributed to the Cyprus Sports Organization and the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth. This strategic initiative seeks to modernize the national sporting framework through evidence-based policy and multi-sectoral cooperation.
