Andreas Mavroyiannis considers 2028 presidential bid amid favorable polling
Former presidential candidate Andreas Mavroyiannis announced on September 18, 2026, that he is weighing a potential run for the 2028 presidential election. During an appearance on the Omega television program “Enimerosi Tora,” Mavroyiannis revealed that he has received several unofficial polls—at least three or four—that place him in the lead, describing these figures as “food for thought” alongside the public support he senses during his daily activities.
Regarding his political alliances, Mavroyiannis characterized his relationship with AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou as excellent and confirmed they maintain regular informal contact. He emphasized his intention not to pressure the party, noting that AKEL has its own established internal procedures. He expressed an openness to collaborating with all political forces, with the explicit exclusion of the far-right.
Mavroyiannis stated that he does not intend to make a decision alone, planning instead to hold consultations with his former campaign associates and supporters. He aims to reach a definitive conclusion regarding his candidacy by the end of 2026. While he noted that the only officially known poll was one leaked by DISY, he maintains that the consistent trend in additional data gives him confidence in the building momentum around his potential candidacy.
