Critical gaps in monitoring Cyprus groundwater extraction
A recent investigation by the investigative reporting network (CIReN) has revealed significant deficiencies in the monitoring of groundwater extraction across Cyprus. While the state regulates allowed extraction limits, it lacks the ability to accurately measure the actual volume of water pumped from the country's vast network of boreholes. As of 2024, there were 137,548 licensed boreholes, with 98,720 predating 2010 when oversight was managed by district authorities.
Data highlights the precarious state of water resources, with 14 of the 22 groundwater systems classified as being in poor condition due to nitrate pollution and seawater intrusion. Current statistics as of March 31, 2026, indicate that 46,353 abstraction points have approved annual limits totaling approximately 149.4 million cubic meters. However, the audit office and experts like former MP Charalambos Theopemptou warn that many older boreholes are missing from official databases, undermining comprehensive management. The reliance on private boreholes for 76% of irrigation supply, combined with inadequate oversight, poses a severe challenge to sustainability amid ongoing water scarcity concerns.
