EU institutions focus on three key budgetary procedures for autumn 2026

The European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) announced that European institutions will prioritize three major budgetary processes during the autumn of 2026. These include the approval of the EU annual budget for 2027, the discharge procedure for the 2025 budget execution, and negotiations concerning the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for the 2028-2034 period.

Regarding the 2027 annual budget, the Council adopted its position on the draft budget on September 4, 2026, following consensus within the Committee of Permanent Representatives. This position has been formally transmitted to the European Parliament. The next legislative milestone is scheduled for October 19-22, 2026, when the European Parliament is expected to review and potentially amend the Council's position. If amendments are proposed, a conciliation committee may be convened to reach a final agreement.

The EPRS has released a detailed timeline outlining the key phases of these three procedures, which are set to continue throughout the remainder of the year.
