Explosions reported in Riyadh following Houthi threats

On the morning of September 19, 2026, air raid sirens were activated in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, and the city of Al-Kharj, marking the first such alert since the escalation of hostilities with Houthi rebels in Yemen. Residents reported receiving mobile phone warnings around 3:00 a.m., followed shortly by two powerful explosions. While the Civil Protection authority declared the all-clear approximately 30 minutes later, witnesses later observed flames and thick black smoke rising from an area near the Riyadh airport.

The incident follows a statement by a Houthi military spokesperson, who had accused Saudi Arabia of unspecified 'criminal attempts' in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and vowed retaliation. The Saudi government has not issued an official comment on the events. Although the Saudi-led coalition has been involved in a long-standing conflict against the Houthis, who control significant parts of Yemen, previous attacks had largely been limited to the country's southern regions or Red Sea oil facilities, making this reach into the capital a significant escalation in regional tensions.
