Series of earthquakes strike northern Evia

A series of seismic events occurred in northern Evia, Greece, starting on Friday morning, September 18, 2026. The initial quake measured 4.3 on the Richter scale and was centered 9 kilometers southeast of Vasilika Istiaias at a focal depth of 5 kilometers. It was felt throughout the region and in parts of Attica. A subsequent tremor of 4.1 magnitude occurred at 01:11 on September 19, with its epicenter located 6 kilometers southeast of Vasilika Istiaias at a depth of approximately 17 kilometers.

Efthymios Lekkas, Professor of Dynamic Tectonic Applied Geology and President of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP), has issued reassuring statements regarding the activity. While monitoring the sequence, experts noted that the region is not typically associated with high-magnitude seismic events. Reports indicate the tremors were felt as far as Larissa, Pelion, and the Sporades, although the focal depth varies slightly in expert estimations, with some assessments citing 13.4 kilometers.

Authorities continue to monitor the seismic sequence closely. There are currently no reports of significant damage, and the situation remains under observation by the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.
