Cyprus to debut Barak MX air defence system at Independence Day parade

Cyprus will publicly display its Israeli-made Barak MX air defence system for the first time during the military parade marking Independence Day on October 1, 2026, in Nicosia. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas confirmed the debut, noting that the event will feature a contingent from the Egyptian armed forces alongside units from allied countries, with Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias also in attendance.

The Barak MX system, delivered to Cyprus in late 2024, is designed to intercept aircraft, helicopters, drones, and cruise missiles with a range of up to 150 kilometers depending on the interceptor used. The deployment represents a strategic shift as the National Guard begins replacing aging Russian-made Tor-M1 and Buk systems. Minister Palmas emphasized that while the military is managing ongoing tensions, including frequent violations of the Nicosia flight information region by Turkish aircraft, the government seeks to avoid further escalation.

Ahead of the celebrations, Minister Palmas is scheduled to travel to Cairo for trilateral discussions with Greek and Egyptian officials. The talks aim to coordinate joint exercises and training protocols, reinforcing regional military cooperation.
