President Christodoulides highlights growth of Cypriot economy and shipping

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides addressed the robust development of the national economy and the strengthening of the shipping sector during a dinner hosted by the Cyprus Shipowners Association in Athens on September 19, 2026. The event was attended by the President of the Hellenic Parliament, Konstantinos Tasoulas.

During his address, President Christodoulides noted that Cyprus has achieved an 'A' credit rating from all major international rating agencies, while the public debt has decreased to below 48% of the country's GDP. Additionally, he highlighted that the total capacity of the Cypriot merchant fleet has reached its highest level in the last 25 years, underscoring the sector's vital role in the national economy.

Polys Hajioannou, President of the Cyprus Shipowners Association, expressed gratitude for the government's support, specifically praising the efforts of the Deputy Minister of Shipping and the Ministry's staff in promoting the industry. The President emphasized that these economic and maritime achievements reflect the overall resilience of the Cypriot state.
