Residents of Mitsero protest against new asphalt plant

Residents from eight communities in the Mitsero region held a peaceful protest on September 17, 2026, at the proposed site of a new asphalt plant. The demonstration was organized to voice strong opposition to the industrial project, which the local population claims is moving forward without their consultation and despite existing environmental concerns in the area.

The Mitsero Community Council, representing the affected areas, stated that the region already suffers from accumulated environmental issues that remain unresolved, contrary to previous government commitments and legal obligations. They emphasized that state experts have already documented these grievances, making the addition of another industrial facility unacceptable. The communities argued that while the process for the asphalt plant installation continues, no meaningful progress has been made to improve the current environmental conditions.

The local representatives have vowed to continue their struggle and maintain that they will not accept decisions made without their input. Currently, the communities are pursuing a legal battle to block the construction of the plant and have announced plans to escalate their mobilizations if the installation process proceeds.
