Legendary Italian footballer Sandro Mazzola dies at 83

Sandro Mazzola, one of the most iconic figures in Italian football and an Inter Milan legend, passed away at the age of 83. Born in Turin in 1942, he was the son of Valentino Mazzola, the captain of the legendary Grande Torino team who perished in the 1949 Superga tragedy. Sandro forged his own massive legacy by dedicating his entire professional career to Inter Milan from 1960 to 1977.

Throughout his 17-season tenure, Mazzola made 565 appearances and scored 161 goals, ranking as the club's fifth-highest scorer of all time. He was a central figure in Helenio Herrera's 'Grande Inter' side, winning four Serie A titles, two European Cups, and two Intercontinental Cups. Notably, in 1964, he scored two goals in the 3-1 victory against Real Madrid in the European Cup final. On the international stage, he represented Italy 70 times with 22 goals, securing the 1968 European Championship title and reaching the 1970 World Cup final.

His passing marks the end of an era for the Nerazzurri, with the club confirming his death on September 19, 2026. He is remembered for his technical prowess, speed, and efficiency as both an attacking midfielder and a forward.
