Cyprus government seeks funding to enforce traffic fines for Turkish Cypriot vehicles

The Cypriot government has requested parliamentary approval for a budget of €146,640 plus VAT to implement the 'Photo Radar List' application. This technical system aims to enable police to track and issue traffic fines to drivers at checkpoints, police stations, and during the issuance of criminal records. The project is being managed by the contractor Modaxo Traffic Management.

The urgency for this funding stems from a large backlog of unserved traffic fines, with sources reporting between 12,000 and 16,000 pending penalties linked to Turkish Cypriot vehicles. Because authorities currently lack access to the northern occupied areas, these fines have remained uncollected since the implementation of the photo enforcement system. This marks the third time the government has submitted this proposal to the Parliamentary Committee on Finance to overcome legislative resistance.

If the funding is released, the police will integrate the list into daily operations at crossing points, effectively creating a mechanism to hold drivers accountable upon entry or exit. The issue is scheduled for further review by the Parliamentary Committee on Finance this coming Monday, where the government will again seek consent to proceed with the technical upgrade.
