Greek soldier sues state after injury during military training

A 25-year-old Greek soldier serving with ELDYK has initiated legal proceedings against the Greek state, seeking hundreds of thousands of euros in damages following a severe injury sustained during a training exercise. On February 21, 2024, at the Stavrovouni area in Cyprus, a hand grenade exploded prematurely, resulting in the soldier's right hand being amputated and causing significant injury to his right eye.

Approximately 20 months after the incident, the soldier suffered a severe infection that necessitated the surgical removal of his eye. Legal filings in the Athens Administrative Court of First Instance allege that the military equipment was faulty. Specifically, lawyers argue that the grenade belonged to a batch that should have been withdrawn due to expired shelf-life dates set by the manufacturer. Reports indicate that the only inspection conducted prior to the exercise was a visual check performed by a lieutenant.

This case has reignited public debate regarding the quality control and safety protocols for military hardware utilized by the National Guard and ELDYK. As the litigation proceeds, the court is currently evaluating the claims regarding negligence in equipment maintenance and the resulting impact on the soldier's long-term physical and mental health.
