Bicommunal environmental cleanup held in Nicosia for World Cleanup Day

On the morning of Saturday, September 19, 2026, dozens of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot volunteers participated in a bicommunal cleanup operation in Nicosia to mark World Cleanup Day. Organized by the NGO “Let’s Do It! Cyprus” in collaboration with the Turkish Cypriot “Green Action Movement” (Yeşil Barış Hareketi), the initiative aimed to remove litter from the Venetian walls of the historic capital.

The action commenced at 09:30 from two locations, Faneromeni Church and Büyük Han. Volunteers cleaned areas along the Venetian walls before converging at the Home for Cooperation around 11:00. The event received support from the High Commission of India, which provided commemorative t-shirts featuring Mahatma Gandhi, and the Embassy of Ireland. Nicosia mayors Charalambos Prountzos and Mehmet Harmanci expressed their support, with Prountzos highlighting the importance of community participation in universal causes such as environmental protection.

World Cleanup Day is an annual global initiative recognized by the United Nations and typically observed on September 20. This year’s event in Nicosia served as a symbolic gesture of cooperation between the two communities, emphasizing the necessity of joint social action to address environmental pollution.
