Nea Salamina and Anorthosis hold joint event for Famagusta
On September 19, 2026, during the fourth round of the Cypriot championship, the football teams Nea Salamina and Anorthosis held a joint symbolic demonstration at the Ammochostos Stadium. Both clubs, which originate from the occupied city of Famagusta, used the pre-match period to express their collective hope for returning to their home city.
Runners from both teams completed a circuit of the stadium carrying olive branches and a banner reading, "From the same city, for the same return. Two teams, one dream. We run together, we return together." Additionally, as the players entered the pitch, another banner displaying the beach of the fenced-off area of Famagusta was presented to the spectators. The initiative was met with strong applause from the fans, highlighting the shared history and cultural ties that transcend the sporting rivalry between the two organizations.
This event follows a long tradition of both clubs maintaining their identity as refugees from the occupied territories. The demonstration served as a reminder of the ongoing geopolitical situation regarding the status of Famagusta, emphasizing unity and memory among their respective supporters despite the competitive nature of the derby match.
