Cyprus government announces agricultural support package amid climate and production challenges

The Cypriot agricultural sector is facing significant difficulties due to prolonged drought, heatwaves, and outbreaks of downy mildew, which have severely impacted production. During recent public events in Ormideia and Statos-Agios Fotios, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Christos Senekis, announced new government measures to support local producers. These include 1.5 million euros in additional financial aid for professional farmers and the allocation of 3.5 million cubic meters of water for irrigation, which will be available until the end of 2026.

Furthermore, the government plans to dedicate approximately 22 million euros from European funds in 2027 to support the restructuring of vineyards, a sector currently struggling with dramatic production declines. Minister Senekis emphasized that these measures are intended as immediate relief rather than a comprehensive long-term solution to the water shortage. He noted that future water security strategies will focus on the construction of new desalination plants, increased use of reclaimed water, and improved conservation efforts. Additionally, the government is processing over 250 applications for the "First Installation of Young Farmers" program as part of its broader effort to revitalize the industry.
