Cyprus government announces support for farmers and increased irrigation water

On September 19, 2026, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus, Christos Senekis, announced new government measures to support agricultural producers while attending the 21st Pancyprian Pomegranate Festival in Ormideia. The cabinet has approved two financial aid plans totaling 1.5 million euros specifically for professional farmers. Furthermore, the government has authorized the allocation of an additional 3.5 million cubic meters of water for irrigation purposes, which will be available through the end of 2026.

During his address, Minister Senekis highlighted the historical significance of pomegranate cultivation in Ormideia, noting that systematic farming in the region currently spans 350 to 400 decares. He cited historical records from 1934 showing that local producers exported 25,000 okades of pomegranates to England, reflecting a long tradition of agricultural export. Addressing current challenges, the Minister also noted that over 250 applications have been submitted for the 'First Installation of Young Farmers' program, indicating ongoing interest in the sector despite existing difficulties.
