Cyprus government announces support measures for farmers

On September 19, 2026, during the 21st Pomegranate Festival in Ormideia, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Christos Senekis, announced new government support measures for professional farmers. The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a financial aid package totaling 1.5 million euros, alongside an allocation of an additional 3.5 million cubic meters of water for irrigation, which will be available through the end of 2026.

Minister Senekis highlighted the historical significance of pomegranate cultivation in the Ormideia region, noting that systematic production currently covers between 350 and 400 decares. He referenced archival data from 1934, which recorded the export of 25,000 okades of pomegranates to England, as evidence of the area's long-standing agricultural export tradition. The minister acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by contemporary producers, stating that the government is committed to supporting the evolution of this traditional sector through these economic and infrastructure interventions.
