Health Minister reaffirms state commitment to identifying 1974 missing persons

During a memorial service in Agios Tychonas on Sunday, September 20, 2026, Minister of Health Neofytos Charalampidis emphasized that the Cypriot state maintains a fundamental obligation to identify all remaining missing persons from the 1974 conflict. He stated that the government remains committed to pursuing access to necessary information and all potential excavation sites to bring closure to affected families.

The address honored the memory of Iraklis Christofi Agathokleous, who was born in 1956 and served in the 286th Mechanized Infantry Battalion. On August 15, 1974, during the second phase of the Turkish invasion, his platoon was surrounded near the area of Kontemenos and Skylloura. Iraklis and 22 fellow soldiers went missing during an attempt to break through the encirclement. His remains were identified via DNA analysis in the summer of 2017, leading to a funeral held 43 years after his disappearance. The Minister noted that while this provided closure for one family, the state continues its efforts to determine the fate of other individuals who vanished during the same period.
