Cypriot authorities seize narcotics and untaxed tobacco products

Cypriot customs and narcotics enforcement agencies have conducted a series of successful operations across the island, resulting in the seizure of illegal substances and smuggled goods. Between September 10 and 11, 2026, authorities at Larnaca Airport discovered five kilograms and 798 grams of dried cannabis in two packages originating from third countries. The Narcotics Squad (YKAN) has launched an investigation into these shipments.

Separately, on September 21, customs officials performed multiple interventions at transit points and airports. At the Deryneia crossing, 7.4 kilograms of untaxed hookah tobacco were seized from an Israeli passenger traveling to Larnaca Airport, resulting in a 2,600 euro out-of-court settlement. Meanwhile, at Ayios Dhometios, another 2.4 kilograms of hookah tobacco were confiscated, leading to an 850 euro fine and a 150 euro vehicle release fee. Additionally, at Paphos Airport, two Israeli women were found carrying 29 cartons of cigarettes, totaling 5,800 units, which lacked required health warnings. They were fined 1,140 euros and 600 euros respectively. All confiscated items are scheduled for destruction, and investigations remain active.
