Anti-poaching operation in Larnaca leads to rescue of trapped birds

Members of the Anti-Poaching Squad from the Mobile Immediate Action Force (MMAD) conducted a raid in the Larnaca district on September 20, 2026, in an area where hunting is strictly prohibited. The operation was part of an ongoing police campaign aimed at eliminating illegal trapping activities in Cyprus.

During the intervention, officers discovered seven illegal trapping nets and three sound-producing devices used to mimic bird calls. According to most reports, 103 live birds were rescued and released into their natural environment, while 12 dead birds were recovered. However, the Cyprus Mail reported slightly different figures, stating that 105 birds were found alive out of a total of 115, though it agreed on the discovery of 12 dead birds. The authorities are currently searching for the person responsible for the site, and the Kofinou regional police station is continuing the investigation.

This incident follows a separate case from the previous week in the same district, where a significant fine of €13,500 was imposed for similar illegal bird-trapping activities involving 17 birds.
