Sixteen-year-old boy killed in motorcycle accident in Argaka

A 16-year-old student, Yiorgos Hatziioannou from Ayia Marina Chrysochous, died in a fatal motorcycle accident on the afternoon of Sunday, September 20, 2026, in Argaka, Paphos. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue when the teenager lost control of his unregistered racing motorcycle. The vehicle struck the pavement before colliding with an Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) pole. The victim was transported to Polis Chrysochous Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances, including reports that he may have been returning from a nearby motocross track. A post-mortem examination performed by medical examiner Dr. Orthodoxos Orthodoxou confirmed that the cause of death was severe craniocerebral injuries and multiple bodily trauma. Police are also examining testimony suggesting that while the teenager was wearing a helmet, it was not securely fastened, potentially contributing to the fatal outcome. The investigation continues, with police focusing on the legality of the motorcycle's presence on public roads and the involvement of other potential witnesses who were reportedly riding with him. His funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Holy Church of Agia Marina.
