Cyprus prepares for winter vaccination campaign against flu, Covid-19, and RSV

Cyprus is launching its national vaccination campaign in mid-October, targeting seasonal influenza, Covid-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The Ministry of Health has secured 170,000 doses of the flu vaccine, which will be distributed to personal doctors. Additionally, 112,722 doses of Covid-19 vaccines for adults and 11,550 for children are expected within the next two months. Supplies for the RSV vaccine are already available for pregnant women and children.

The rollout will prioritize individuals over the age of 60, followed by other vulnerable groups, before opening up to the general public. Dr. Mary Avraamidou, president of the Personal Doctors association, emphasized that the vaccines are essential for reducing mortality. While sporadic, travel-related flu cases have already been detected, the peak season is expected to begin in the second half of December.

The initiative comes amid growing international concern over declining vaccination rates. A study in The Lancet highlighted that 16 European Union nations, including Cyprus, Bulgaria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Romania, and Sweden, have seen a drop in historical childhood vaccination coverage, prompting officials to ensure adequate supply and public participation to bolster health security for the upcoming winter season.
