Cyprus tourism sector recovers to a 5% projected decline for 2026

Cyprus Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis reported that the decline in the national tourism sector has stabilized at 8% for the first seven months of 2026. Official projections indicate that the annual reduction is expected to be limited to 5% by the end of the year. The year had initially begun with record-breaking performance during January and February, marking the strongest start in the history of the island's tourism industry.

However, a significant crisis occurred on March 1, when approximately 70% of all scheduled flights to Cyprus were cancelled indefinitely, disrupting travel operations and requiring immediate government intervention. The months of March and April subsequently experienced a sharp downturn. Deputy Minister Koumis described the event as an unprecedented crisis for the sector, forcing the government to manage the fallout of the sudden collapse in flight connectivity. Despite these challenges, the current data reflects a trend toward stabilization, suggesting a more resilient performance for the remainder of the year compared to the initial projections following the March disruption.
