25-year-old biologist murdered in Igoumenitsa by former partner

On Sunday night, September 20, 2026, 25-year-old biologist Penelope Asimakopoulou was found dead at a kiosk on a bicycle path in Igoumenitsa, Greece. Her 27-year-old former partner, who had recently traveled from Egaleo, confessed to the killing following an intense argument, which he claimed stemmed from financial disputes. The victim suffered ten stab wounds, including two to the neck and multiple blows to the back and chest.

Initially, the perpetrator attempted to mislead authorities by calling the emergency services and claiming that both he and the victim had been attacked by four hooded strangers. To make his story appear credible, he inflicted several self-harm wounds on his own chest, near his heart. Police eventually dismissed this narrative due to contradictions and confirmed that the suspect had orchestrated the attack after their relationship ended a month prior.

The suspect is currently under police guard at Filiates Hospital, where he is recovering from self-inflicted lung injuries. He faces formal charges of intentional homicide, domestic violence, illegal possession of weapons, and drug possession. He is scheduled to provide his formal testimony before the prosecutor on Thursday, September 24.
