Diplomatic efforts for Cyprus settlement intensify at the UN General Assembly

President Nikos Christodoulides is currently participating in a series of high-level meetings at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, focusing on the resumption of negotiations for the Cyprus problem. Despite skepticism in Cyprus, the President has suggested that behind-the-scenes discussions may facilitate a breakthrough, aiming for an enlarged meeting similar to the 2017 Crans-Montana talks. During the week, Christodoulides met with UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham to reiterate calls for the recognition of the sovereign equality of the Turkish Cypriot side.

Beyond the political negotiations, Christodoulides announced that significant new American corporate investments in Cyprus are forthcoming, citing recent economic growth and a category A credit rating from Standard & Poor’s. The President plans to further review the week's diplomatic progress with the Cypriot diaspora on Friday evening. Meanwhile, the United Nations maintains its mediation efforts, with further meetings scheduled between Guterres, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, and other stakeholders to determine the feasibility of reviving the peace process.
