President Christodoulides anticipates developments on Cyprus issue during UN visit

President Nikos Christodoulides, currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, stated on Sunday that he does not rule out significant developments regarding the resumption of UN-led negotiations for a Cyprus settlement. Despite prevailing skepticism in Cyprus, the President emphasized that the Cyprus problem remains the focus of his high-level meetings throughout the week. He intends to provide a comprehensive assessment of the week's outcomes during a follow-up meeting with the Federation of Cypriot American Organisations on Friday evening.

Beyond diplomatic efforts, President Christodoulides announced that major American corporations are expected to reveal significant investments in Cyprus soon. He highlighted the country’s economic recovery, noting that the public debt-to-GDP ratio has fallen from 80 percent three and a half years ago to 48 percent today, alongside a category A credit rating from Standard & Poor’s. The President also outlined future plans, including visits to Ohio, Boston, and Florida to court further investment, and a new campaign in New York aimed at encouraging the return of Cypriot talent to the country. He is scheduled to return to New York in late November for a Financial Times conference.
