Diesel prices exceed two euros per litre in Cyprus

Fuel prices in Cyprus have surged, with diesel costs crossing the two-euro-per-litre threshold on September 21, 2026. Data from the Ministry of Commerce’s Fuel Price Observatory confirms that while the national average for diesel is €1.946, prices in Nicosia and Paphos have exceeded €2, reaching a peak of €2.039. Unleaded 95 petrol averages €1.677, with prices ranging from €1.599 to €1.749, while unleaded 98 ranges from €1.639 to €1.799.

Industry representatives, including Christodoulos Christodoulou of the Petrol Station Owners Association, warn that further price hikes are imminent as companies adjust their rates. These increases are exacerbating public concern, with experts noting that higher costs are pushing consumers toward the occupied territories for fuel. Furthermore, heating oil has risen by 3 cents to €1.60 per litre. Critics argue that government subsidies of up to 5 cents would be insufficient to mitigate the financial strain on citizens facing broader inflation across services and goods.

Consumer advocates like Marios Drousiotis, President of the Cyprus Consumers Association, state that market volatility makes it difficult to project prices beyond the coming week. The government is currently facing calls to find structural solutions to reduce energy costs and prevent consumer flight to non-government-controlled areas.
