Cyprus educational unions prepare for protests over teacher appointment system

Educational unions in Cyprus are preparing for protest actions following a breakdown in negotiations with the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth regarding reforms to the teacher appointment system. The decision stems from recent meetings between union representatives and Minister Athena Michaelidou, which failed to address concerns over the proposed changes.

At the center of the dispute is the Ministry's stated intention to abolish the 'appointment list' without providing adequate guarantees for existing labor rights. Unions argue that the current plan unfairly impacts both teachers on the appointment list and those already in the system. Furthermore, the Ministry has reportedly rejected a formal union demand to amend legislation that would exempt indefinite-term contract teachers from potential redundancy, leaving the parties at a stalemate as no updated government proposal has been presented.

The unions, including Poed, Oelmek, and Oltek, have expressed deep dissatisfaction with the lack of progress. While the Ministry has previously indicated it was working on a reform proposal, the current deadlock suggests an escalation of tensions as unions consider their next steps to challenge the proposed legislation.
